Virginia Deep Sea Fishing for Wahoo

Wahoo are among the fastest pelagic fish. They easily attain speeds exceeding 50 mph and are known for their stealth. These beautiful fish are long and slender, with vertical blue stripes. They have blue eyes and a wide opening mouth equipped with razor sharp teeth.Virginia deep sea fishing boats begin catching wahoo in mid-summer along the 20 fathom line. Other good areas to target are many of the lumps and ridges in 30-50 fathoms.Wahoo are also caught in deepwater areas such as the Washington and Norfolk Canyons.

These structures have amazing features which produce conditions that attract several types of fish and other ocean life. West of the canyon walls are shallower but still productive areas. Near the canyon walls, the bottom becomes steeper and rockier. Wahoo and other fish congregate along the dropoffs, waiting to ambush baitfish.Wahoo use their combination of speed and sharp teeth when hunting. They have been known to charge thru, Sea Fishing Products, a school of fish, with their mouth wide open.

Their teeth need only to touch baitfish to slice them cleanly in half. After the initial charge, wahoo may turn and cruise back in lower in the water column, catching any injured or dead fish that sink.Wahoo are very difficult to catch. Their teeth cut monofilament, Sea Fishing Products, line effortlessly. When targeting wahoo specifically, many anglers switch to wire in order to avoid being cut off by the fish. Sometimes wire leaders work, but since wahoo have keen eyesight, they sometimes detect the wire leader material and refuse to bite.

A switch back to mono might get bites, but then the angler is back to loosing rigs and missing fish again! While wahoo are known for their speed, beauty and difficulty to catch, perhaps their most famous attribute is their table quality. Wahoo are among the most delicious of fish. Their meat is mild and white with a distinctive texture and flavor. Wahoo are delicious grilled, blackened, smoked or broiled. Wahoo are favorites not only among deep sea fishing enthusiasts and seafood lovers but also nautical art lovers.

The thrill of landing a cod, haddock or even a shark and then hauling it in is second to none, and will have you coming back time and time again. Deep sea fishing has become hugely popular up and down the coast of Maine, with chartered trips running throughout the summer taking everyone from beginners to seasoned professionals for a taste of the action. What is Deep Sea Fishing?

As the name suggests, deep sea fishing takes place several miles off coast where the waters are much colder and deeper. Chartered trips can go anywhere from a few miles to seventy miles off coast depending on what species they are targeting and the time of year. Particularly good spots for deep sea fishing include ledges and other obstructions on the seabed which are used as current breakers. There are several methods employed by deep sea fisherman. Commercially and occasionally on chartered trips, nets are used which allow for large hauls of fish to be caught by trawling over large areas.

However, most pleasure trips stick to using heavy duty rods and equipment which allows anglers to target particular species and enjoy the thrill of the fight. Few sights are as breathtaking as a strong, beautiful fish leaping from the water in a bid to break free. What Fish are on Offer? There are many species of fish on offer to deep sea anglers, with the majority of chartered trips offering the usual cod, haddock, red hake and red fish. Deep Sea Fishing For Cusk In Maine

The cusk is not a particularly sought-after fish in Maine, with most anglers preferring larger, more popular table fish such as cod or haddock. However, the cusk still provides reasonable fishing action, largely thanks to the wide variety of bait it will accept. In nature, the cusk is very similar to cod, in that it is a bottom-feeding fish found predominantly in moderately deep water on rough ground. Good places to find cusk include underwater obstacles such as wrecks, shelves and ledges, which they use as a current breaker and to hunt for small prey on the seabed.

Cusk are easily identifiable by their long, tapered body, which sports a long dorsal fin and rounded tail fin. Cusk are also known to have a long anal fin, blunt nose and a single chin bar bell. Their bodies are a red-brown color on top, with pale yellow-brown sides and an off-white belly. Off the coast of Maine, cusk are generally anywhere between one and a half to two and a half feet in length and weigh in at around five to ten pounds. Larger fish can reach three feet and tip the scales at up to thirty pounds, but these sized cusk are rare.

Many cod and haddock fisherman inadvertently land cusk on a regular basis off the coast of Maine, as the fishing techniques, equipment and bait, Sea Fishing Products, used are exactly the same. A medium to heavy rod coupled with a conventional reel and fifty pound test line will more than suffice for, Sea Fishing Products, cusk fishing, and also give you the option of landing a larger cod or haddock should one bite. Live bait works particularly well, and popular choices include sea worms, herring or mackerel.

Cut bait, claims, artificial lures and jigs are also known to attract cusk and work equally well if presented correctly.Another advantage of cusk is that, like cod, they are available throughout most of the year, though the summer and fall months are reputed to be the best. In terms of location, the cusk is found in moderately deep waters anywhere between sixty and ninety feet. Many chartered trips head out to the southern regions of the Gulf of Maine, where a wide variety of fish, including cusk, can be caught.

Angler Fish - Glowing Deep Sea Monsters

Anglerfishes are famous for their unusual predatory technique. Their first spine have been developed into a fishing pole with a little bate in the end. The fishing pole is actually named "illicium" and the bate is named "esca". The esca is a fleshy growth found at the end of the illicium. When a predatory fish notices the esca, it thinks that it is a suitable prey. It swims close to the esca, and is rapidly overtaken by the Anglerfish before it gets a change to swallow the esca. There are more than 200 known species of Anglerfish in the world, and more might be found in the future since a lot of the Angler fish species inhabit great depths far down in the ocean where humans and their research equipment seldom venture.

The Anglefish species are not contained in any special family or genera, they are instead spread out over several different families. They do however belong to the same order; Lophiiformes. (The order of the bony fishes.)Angel fish species are famous for their capability to kill and consume prey that is much larger than them selves. The ambush effect makes it possible for Angelfishes to kill large prey and their adaptable body makes it possible for them to swallow the catch. Their jaws can be distended to accommodate huge prey and their thin and flexible bones make their stomach larger.

The stomach of an Angler fish is very stretchy. As mentioned above, a lot of the Anglerfish species dwell far down in the ocean. They inhabit, Sea Fishing Products, aphotic zones to where the suns' light can not penetrate. A normal esca is therefore invisible. The deep living Angler fish species have solved this by entering a symbiotic relationship with a certain type of bacteria than produce light. The bacteria colonise the esca and make it glow in the dark, an example of so called bioluminescence.

Bioluminescence is a common feature in deep sea living organisms and other predatory fishes in the aphotic zone will therefore assume that the small esca is a suitable prey. The rest of the Angler fish is dark and can not be detected in the aphotic environment. The light from the esca is not strong enough to illuminate the body of the fish, nor is the light from other bioluminescent organisms. The Angler fish can therefore stay completely hidden and ambush the unsuspecting predatory fish.Deep sea Angler fish have developed an unusual method of reproduction.

Once a male Anglerfish finds a female Anglerfish, he will never leave her. He attaches himself to her body using his sharp teeth and produces an enzyme that gradually allows him access to her blood stream. The two fishes will gradually melt together and the male will not hunt, he will get all the nutrition that he needs from the female Anglerfish. When she is ready to ovulate, the hormone levels in her blood will make the male produce sperm than can fertilize, Sea Fishing Products, the eggs.
